It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the conference 'Power, Justice, and Democracy,' which will take place on April 7th and 8th in the auditorium of the Musée des Lanifícios (University of Beira Interior).
The conference aims to critically re-examine the complex relationship between power, justice, and democracy—three central pillars of Western political thought whose practical connection remains problematic. In a context marked by the rise of populism, the judicialization of politics, and deepening inequalities, the event will seek to reflect on how these concepts are being reconfigured today. Bringing together perspectives from philosophy, political science, and law, the conference will debate the following questions:
How is power structured and legitimized in the 21st century?
What ideas of justice inform our democratic institutions?
Are the institutional frameworks inherited from the 20th century still capable of realizing the ideal of a substantive and just democracy?
