The International Congress on Ethics and Biology: Competition, Collaboration and Evolution will take place on October 29 and 30, 2024, at the University of Beira Interior. A partnership between PRAXIS - Centre for Philosophy, Politics and Culture and the Hans Jonas Centre Brazil, organized by David Geraldes Santos (UBI/PRAXIS) and Grégori de Souza (PUCPR-UC/PRAXIS).
The aim of the International Congress on Ethics and Biology: Competition, Collaboration and Evolutionis to explore the relationships between competition, collaboration and evolution in contemporary biology and ethics. We look to promote an interdisciplinary dialogue that allows for a deeper understanding of competitive and collaborative dynamics in nature and society, examining how these principles shape human behaviour, ecological relationships between humans and extra-humans, as well as ethical systems. In doing so, we aim to provide contributions to a Philosophy of Biology (or Philosophical Biology), as well as finding ethical approaches that can collaborate to promote sustainable coexistence and social justice, recognising both the importance of competition in natural selection and the critical need for collaboration in tackling global challenges.
Thematic sessions:
1. Ethics of Competition in Nature and Society: Analysis of the ethical implications of competition between organisms in nature and between individuals and groups in human society. This may include discussions of justice, individualism versus altruism and the ethical consequences of unbridled competition. 2. Collaboration and Cooperation in Evolution and Human Ethics: Investigation of the evolutionary foundations of collaboration and cooperation between organisms and their application to human ethical systems. This may include issues such as the evolution of morality, the origin of values and the ethical implications of interspecies collaboration. 3. Bioethics and Contemporary Challenges: Critical analysis of emerging ethical issues at the intersection of biology, technology and society. This may include debates on genetic manipulation, artificial intelligence, environmental conservation and equity of access to scientific advances. 4. Environmental Ethics and Conservation: Investigation into the ethical responsibilities of human beings in relation to the environment and other forms of life. This may include discussions on animal ethics, plant ethics, biodiversity conservation, environmental justice and sustainability. 5. Philosophy of Biology, Philosophical Biology and Evolutionary Ethics: Analysis of the philosophical issues underlying biology and its relationship to ethics. This may include debates on the nature of life, the evolution of morality, the relationship between nature and culture, and the ethical implications of the scientific understanding of evolution.
We invite proposals for academic contributions that include the themes described above. Those interested should send an abstract of between 500 and 800 words, with a brief biographical note (max. 150 words), a sign of the thematic session and the mode of participation (in-person or online) to gregori.souza@ubi.pt by 31 August 2024. Selected submissions will be confirmed in mid-September. The languages accepted are Portuguese, Spanish and English. The event will be in-person and online.
